3 of Waco's FIRST Robotics Competition teams are led by girls

WACO, Texas - For the first time ever, three of Waco's FIRST Robotics Competition teams are led by females.

They represent Harmony Science Academy, Rapoport, and the Girl Scouts.

The Captains; Nadia Ruiz, Harmony.

Alicia Martinez, Rapoport.

Colleen Goggin and Marissa Anderson, Girl Scouts.

Their teams compete with other teams from all over the world.

According to Harmony Science Academy, 1 in 7 females will show interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

STEM fields are generally dominated by males.

"It's our job to be able to encourage women, young women out here because what they are going to do, they are going to speak to other people. And to me, I believe that it's just a chain that goes on. And so in order for us to make a change you got to do it now," said Nadia Ruiz.

These ladies also influenced a decision made to hosts the Regional FIRST Robotics Competition this upcoming Spring.

This will be the first time it's hosted in Waco at University High School.

The dates are set for March 30th- April 1st.
