Waco hosts Peace Officer Memorial

WACO, Texas -

Dozens of people showed up at Indian Springs in Waco Thursday morning for a Peace Officer Memorial to remember those who died in the line of duty.

A flag-bearing honor guard group marched to the ceremony as bagpipes played a tribute.

At the ceremony, everyone took a moment to pray before hearing the names of some of the fallen in our state.

This year, around 50 officers have died in the line of duty across the country, two were from Texas.

Police said that's an increase from this time last year.

"While they are very well trained and they are prepared to lay down their life, they don't go out wanting to do that, but they know it's a possibility. Sometimes as humans we get caught up in our day to day activities and we forget the gravity that it is these peace officers do on a day to day basis," said Chief Ryan Holt, Waco Police Department.

Police said they are working to continue to strengthen their relationship with the community to avoid these type of tragic situations.
