Marine vet gets mortgage-free house

WACO, TX - U-S Marine Sergeant Darryl Thomas Thursday received the keys to his newly renovated home in Waco,

The home has been donated mortgage-free by the Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals in partnership with Bank of America.

Sgt Thomas served five years and did two tours in Kuwait and Iraq and was discharged in 2005.

After he got out into the civilian world, Thomas faced various difficulties and became homeless on two different occasions.

Somehow, against all odds, Segeant Thomas the Marine became Darryl Thomas, the school teacher.

He now works for Midway ISD and says he is especially proud of his work mentoring at risk young men transitioning from childhood to manhood.

Sergeant Thomas is a father of five children and says he draws inspiration from his wife who is disabled but who he says refuses to quit on life.

It was an emotional scene Thursday morning when the family gathered at the home.

Established in 2011, the USA Homeownership Foundation, Inc.doing business as The  Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals (VAREP) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to increasing sustainable homeownership, financial literacy education and economic opportunity for the active military and veteran communities

 

As part of Bank of America's efforts to help revitalize communities and support the housing needs of those who have served and sacrificed for our nation, the company has donated more than 1,900 homes nationwide to military veteran-support charities and other nonprofit, community-based organizations.
