WACO, TX - U-S Marine Sergeant Darryl Thomas Thursday received the keys to his newly renovated home in Waco,
The home has been donated mortgage-free by the Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals in partnership with Bank of America.
Sgt Thomas served five years and did two tours in Kuwait and Iraq and was discharged in 2005.
After he got out into the civilian world, Thomas faced various difficulties and became homeless on two different occasions.
Somehow, against all odds, Segeant Thomas the Marine became Darryl Thomas, the school teacher.
He now works for Midway ISD and says he is especially proud of his work mentoring at risk young men transitioning from childhood to manhood.
Sergeant Thomas is a father of five children and says he draws inspiration from his wife who is disabled but who he says refuses to quit on life.
It was an emotional scene Thursday morning when the family gathered at the home.
