BPD offers free welfare calls to check on elderly citzens of Belton

BELTON, Texas - A program designed to check on the welfare of senior citizens is taking over the city of Belton!

The 'R U OK?" Senior Program started by the Belton Police Departments establishes a prearranged time for local seniors to receive a weekly phone call checking up on them.

If the person is okay, they will simply say 'yes' and may hang up.

If the senior does not answer or the line is busy, an officer will be dispatched to the location for a safety check.

Volunteers of the Belton Police Department Citizens Academy are the friendly voices on the other end of the line.

"I think there's an element of safety to this, it makes the people who are receiving these calls feel a little bit safer, but it also brings friendship. People bond over these phone calls," said Paul Romer, spokesman for the city of Belton.

Romer tells Fox 44 News, BPD calls 130 senior citizens weekly as part of the program.
